Savonarola Chair The term derives from the chair on which the Savonarola used to sit was still kept in the convent of San Marco in Florence.

The X-formed chair was copied from an ancient Roman form in almost every European country. Also known as a Savonarola, the chair is named for the Italian Renaissance religious zealot Girolamo Savonarola. Originally used as hall chairs, they were more for decoration than actual seating.
